Notes about AuctionCrotch Auctions
« on: January 14, 2002, 12:32:21 PM »

Here are some general notes about AuctionCrotch Auctions.

The software is based on version 1.3 of PHPAuction.org's PHPAuction software, I've fixed a few things, and added some features that make it a little bit different than the original.

---Features of the auction software:
Free
Uploadable Images
Suggest A Category
Email notification on bids
Reserve Prices
View Bid History
View Closed Auctions
Feedback System
Send Auction To A Friend
Automatic counter on all auctions
Browsable Categories
Test Category
Ability to post messages for the seller
eBay Import option

---Things it can't do:
The Dutch auction format doesn't work as expected, from what I've been able to tell.
"Proxy" type bidding isn't supported. What you bid is what you're willing to pay.
You can't edit your auction after you've placed it. You'd have to contact me to edit it.

---Testing
I've tested this version out on a test server, and I think I have most bugs worked out. Eventually, I'd like to incorporate the forum user database into the auction script, but I haven't had much luck yet.

There is a new version of PHPAuction (2.0) which I'll be installing as soon as a few of the bugs in it are worked out, and an upgrade script is made available.

If you want to test it out, you can use the "Test Category" for your auctions.

How do I get back into my test auction in order to edit it?

I want to add pictures...

Thanks! :)

Oh! Nevermind - I see a link on the right now...

Er...no that's not what that link is for...um...

Help! Help! Help! - thanks again... :)

P.S. Darn, I have to go shovel the drive-way now - hopefully will have this figured out later...eh? See ya!

Seller's can't edit their auctions, that's a bad thing about the auction.

You can send me what you want to add, and I can edit it, or post it here.

Oh - thanks Sneaky...

Is that because the program doesn't work that way - or did you set it up that way for a reason?

It doesn't allow for that. The PHPAuction software really leaves a lot to be desired. Its nice for a small auction site, but there are still bugs in it, and I've been fixing them where I see them.

I just found out today that there aren't any indexes on any columns in the database for PHPAuction, which will severly slow it down the more activity it gets. I'm working on that right now on my test server.

I just finished a database schema for my own auction software, if I ever get start developing it. I'll probably just it here for the fine AC folks, and have a separate web site to distribute it.

Thanks for explaining...

Maybe I'll just delete that test one and do a re-test and this time try to get it all in with the pictures on the first try...now that I've seen it and know how it works that shouldn't be a problem...

A couple more bugs I found....

You can view your past auctions by signing in, and at the bottom of the page (it should be at the top also, but it isn't yet), there is a link to My Auctions. Clicking on that, you can then check the bids you've placed, your closed auctions, active auctions, or your feedback.

A bug exists in displaying closed auctions from your account. The "Actual Bid" column only shows the starting bid, not the closing bid, you have to click on the auction title to get the winning bidder amount, "Current Bid".

I think I've got everything working with the latest upgrades. If you have any problems, let me know. Here is a short list of new features....

1) You can now log into your account and see your current auctions (sign in and click on "Your control panel". You can also see your current bids from here. If your auctions don't have any bids, they can be edited.

2) Viewing your auctions also lists your closed auctions. You can re-list as many as you want (as long as they didn't close with a bid) by selecting which wants you want to re-list and clicking the button at the bottom of the page.

I haven't re-written the ebay import module yet, I'll work on that next.

These bugs:
