LOL Cindy!

We sold out, people were stampeding in to buy the splash guards, and only have two pair of boots left. Our marketing idea was a great success.

Let's hope we never need this gear again!

:P

When I first saw the thread title, I thought you were going to ask about regular online sales, and I thought... how the heck did Cindy know I was freaking out this morning because I didn't get any book sales until about 3 pm this afternoon which is very rare. LOL. I get it now...

Oh, those kind of sales.  Actually I had a pretty good night, so far.

I've got a couple of things ending though that aren't going to make reserve.  Drat

What do you sell? I always like to hear what people specialize in. Can't remember if you're one of the Glass Mavens or not... if so, I guess you sell Glass, which I love but don't sell anymore.

Yup, that's me, one of those old mean & nasty Glass Mavens.

That's what I specialize in, but I love old hardware & light fixtures too.

I sell anything I think will sell.  I stay away from pottery because I don't care for it.

I like porcelain the hand painted stuff personally, but it doesn't sell for what it should.

I've sold bookcase doors with leaded glass, floor lamps, stuff people think I am crazy to ship.  I was on a bird cage kick for awhile.

I just finished putting an addition on my house, so I could get Mt. Ebay outta my regular house!  It had taken over.  So DH & I put on a 1400 sq. ft. addition (1 room and a very large garage with space over that)

OT:  I finally figured out the PM thing here.  Someone needs to clean out their inbox here. :)

BTW, Cindy - for some reason, this made me laugh:  I was on a bird cage kick for awhile.  It just struck me as funny.  It also sounds like me and my great quest to find that one item that will sell like hotcakes because everyone just has to have it.  And then Tommy went and put those splash guards up for sale and I realized that once again, I missed the boat. :D

Chris, I came to a screeching halt with the birdcages.  I got one that had the stand.

A big stand......I had to pack the base in a #7 priority box, then wrap the metal pole with corrugated cardboard and when I got to the top I took 2 #7 boxes and left them flat and covered it that way.

Well, let me tell you, I was mighty proud of my packing job.  Carted it off to the PO and the postie looks at it and bursts out laughing........she thought it was a stop sign.

She then proceeds to tell me it is considered not only oversized, but oddly shaped and it would be $123 to ship it?

After reviving me, I took it back home.  Back & forth emails with the buyer.  (Previous to this I could not get the damn thing apart)

So the buyer was adament he wanted it.  I said OK, but I am taking a wrench to it.  It was so heavily painted, I had to get DH to wrench it apart.

That was the last birdcage with stand I sold.

I have a parrot Cindy, so I can imagine how much that buyer wanted that cage. :)  UPS might have been a better way to go with that one.  My little sister has three parrots and bought cages for them online recently and even though the stands and the cage parts were shipped in separate boxes, the shipping cost was nowhere near what the P.O. wanted from you.  At one point my sister even considered selling cages but with three kids, a husband in the Navy (they move a lot) and a full-time job, she quickly gave up the idea. :)

The competition on ebay and other sites is quite fierce these days with everyone wanting to sell, sell, sell.  I have tried a bunch of different things and sometimes I'd find something that would do well for a while, and then just dwindle out.  I guess it's the same with a lot of people.  Right now I've got some of my inventory listed at ebay in wholesale lots.  I'm going to slowly get out of doing auctions and concentrate my efforts in another area.  I just got a huge lot of clothes that I'll start listing but that was my last purchase for auctions.  I'll continue to list what I have and try to move it, but no more buying new stuff.  Guess I won't be making it to 5000+ feebacks any time soon.  I'll just have to keep my splash guards handy. :)

Clothes?  There's one thing you won't find me competing against you with.  I hate doing clothes.  I did well with some very early Victorian capes, but overall I stay away from them.

I have one bird cage & stand left but I am askeered to see if the stand comes apart.

I also have a mountain of crap that I got in box lots from auctions and some real boners I bought early in my eBay career.  I consider those my lessons in learning.

One time a year I have a garage sale and get rid of the crappy eBay fodder to people who think this line of work is so easy.  I had one guy come back three times last year.

It's those auctions I put on and they take off for whatever reason that keeps me going!  What a rush.

I do the garage sale thing too.  Sometimes I do better with that than ebay.  I advertise it as a flea market style yard sale with all new items.  And then people will come and buy my stuff and say, "you should do flea markets."  Yuck!  We have a HUGE flea market here and I've done it a few times and hated it.  It's so big that you get lost in the shuffle.  I do better with my own little yard sale.  The only good thing about the flea market was the tan I got. :)

The clothes lot I bought came in today.  It had some nice Dockers button-down shirts for men included.  I imagine my son will grab a white one and a blue one.  It also had a funky pair of Abercrombie & Fitch shorts.  Might have to hide those from him.

We'll see how this lot goes.  Obviously some of the stuff won't sell but that's a chance you take when you buy clothes in a lot without seeing them first.  Same thing with the pallet of stuff I bought right before Christmas.  Some of it was great and sold well and other things are just sitting in my garage - I mean my ebay stock room.

There's nothing like listing something and have people bid on it like they just gotta have it.  Right before Christmas I listed some caviar bowls that came in that pallet and they did pretty well.  I guess a lot of people were serving caviar over the holidays.  Ewwww.  I'm not overly fond of fish eggs, but I'm glad other people are.

Flea Markets?  No thank you.  I am a night owl, that's why eBay works so great for me.

I don't have to get up a the crack of dawn to go to work!  Most auctions around here are at night....so it works out great for me.

You get stuff by the pallet?  I don't understand?

I will go out of town to some bigger flea markets downstate or in Vermont or Ct.  All the flea market people here buy from the same auctions I go to.  I honestly don't know how they can make a living at it.  It seems like a hellava lot of work.

A pallet is a skid with boxes of items stacked on it.  Have you ever gone into a Wal-Mart or K-Mart and you see the stuff stacked on those skids?  They're not that wide or long, but the stuff is stacked high on them.  I bought one of those and it was supposed to have a couple thousand items on it all packed in boxes.  Some of the stuff was really nice, but then I get a box full of stuffed animals that I just know I'm not going to sell.  It had some Harry Potter merchandise on it and some of that went before Christmas.  I also have some bowls by Hering which I'm having a hard time getting info about to include it in my listings.  I found a site for Hering - they're in Berlin - and I saw the bowls on the site, but not much info is listed about them.

I also have a 4-Piece Sasaki crystal set of rock glasses that is very, very pretty.  I know nothing about Sasaki and I've been trying to get some info about these glasses.  They're in the original box, however, each one has a price tag on it for $25.00.

The pallet also included a bunch of Madeline Dolls.  My daughter heard of Madeline, but I couldn't recall ever having heard of her.  Other people remembered her though because I sold most of those dolls right before Christmas too.

But, you get junk in with the good stuff and the junk is just that - junk.  It could just be the person I dealt with because it was the first time I bought a pallet of anything or, it could be something that is typical like the lot of clothes I bought - some good stuff, some crappy stuff.

As for the flea market, ours opens at 9:00 am and the regular vendors that have spots come early to set up.  If you're not a regular vendor, you have to wait in line and they don't start putting people through until 8:00.  The first time I went, I was up with the damn birds.  After that, I started leaving my house around 7:45 since the place is just up the road from me.  After the first time I also learned to bring an umbrella to attach to my chair and plenty of water!  Flea markets in the summer are murder.

Chris:  LMAO.........yes I know what a pallet is.  I didn't know you could buy them piled high with crap, I mean eBay treasures.

You're braver than I am!

Sorry Cindy. :)  Yeah, I bought the pallet piled high with goodies.  I go to www.surplus.net where lots of surplus vendors list their goodies.  I was on an email list for one of the vendors who had an interesting pallet for sale.  Someone I know online also saw the same listing and brought it to my attention, so I decided to check it out.  I ended up buying it and in all fairness, it did have some good stuff on it.  It was another one of those learning curves for me.  However, if I ever do something like that again, I'd like to see what I'm getting or at least get a manifest of the contents of the pallet.  Even with that though, there's no guarantee you're going to get great stuff unless you've developed a business relationship with a particular vendor.

I love the bird cage story Cindy. You've just cured me of ever selling a bird cage on eBay LOL

Wow, cmhaas, you're brave buying a whole pallet at a time. It's a real investment.  Was the return worth it? We've looked into it but have decided against buying a whole pallet unless we don't have any other way to get enough merchandise in our area and that hasn't happened so far, so I kind of doubt we will ever do it, I have wondered how others did with that though.

The Hering bowls sound interesting... I collect some German porcelain. Are these porcelain, pottery or glass bowls?

I like handpainted porcelain too Cindy... I still have a few pieces tucked away that I couldn't bring myself to sell.

BTW, I cleaned out my mailbox here... sorry cmhaas

Tommy:  I have some pieces of the HP porcelain too, that I wouldn't sell for $9.99 on eBay.  With the walls bare in my new office, I am planning to display them, now that I have more room!

Those ladies in the early 1900's might not have been professionals, but some of their work is lovely.  I think these items will come into their own, it just might not be in our lifetime.  LOL

Hi Cindy :)

The first few months I was selling on ebay I sold a bunch of hand painted porcelain that I got as a lot at a local auction, trying to learn about it. It was great stuff, wish I hadn't sold some of it. At that time, when ebay was just getting big, I got very good prices on it.  Not anymore, unfortunately.

I like the idea of decorating your office with it.

At garage sales today, mixed in with other stuff were 2 vintage Batman movie posters and also a poster for the movie "TommyBoy".  I can put on my Tommygirl shirt, decorate the office with all the posters, and it will be just like the Bat Cave.

Hi Tommy!

Here is a link to hering's site which shows the bowls -

http://www.hering-berlin.de/pressefotos/a5-5.html

The picture does not show the true color, though.  They almost look white but are actually a very, very, pale shade of aqua.  They're not that big either.  The first one is about 2 1/2" high and 3" wide at the top.  The second bowl is just over 3" high and 4 1/2" wide.  The largest bowl is about 3 3/4" high and 5 1/2" high.

Also, here's a link their homepage which gives a brief description of their products.  You have to scroll down past the German to get to the description in English.

http://www.hering-berlin.de/firmasuite.html

They're really pretty but I wish I was more knowledgeable when it comes to porcelain.

As for the pallet, if you ever buy one, make sure you can see everything that's on it.  I'm still working on breaking even. :)

The Hering bowls are gorgeous. I don't know anything about that designer either. Seems modern.

Actually they would go well as decorative items on the table when I use my china, which is white with a pale greenish aqua stripe and very simple. (Got it at auction of course...)

The bowls do sound a little small, hard to picture what they would be used for, but used to decorate they would dress up the table just by being there.

When you decide how much you would like to sell them for, would you ask me first before listing them? If possible I'd love to get them, if that's ok with you.

Tommy, I have 11 sets of those bowls. :)  They came with my pallet of goodies.  The sizes of the bowls sort of remind me of an Oriental place setting - small bowl for tea, medium bowl for rice, larger bowl for main dish.  I'll get in touch with you and we can work something out on them.
