New Board Software
« on: April 24, 2002, 11:27:24 PM »

It should be fun watching Don Juan mangle this task up.

The OAUA (or should I say ToyRanch) has decided to go with Infopop's UBBThread software for the board upgrade, which was a priority, then it wasn't a priority, now I guess its a priority again.

If you're familiar with GossipBoard, then you'll be familiar with UBBThreads. Gossipboard was the version of WWWthreads before Infopop bought it because vBulletin was competing too much with UBB.

Anyway, here's the thread, if the link doesn't work, go here, and click on the New Board Software link:
http://www.auctioncrotch.com/forums/downlo...ion%20Board.htm

The biggest laugh TR accomplishes is this statement:
Quote

On the other hand, UBBT offers some features that vB does not offer. The primary of those being the ability to set thread view defaults to expanded/collapsed and flat/threaded mode. If you are not familiar with what that means, basically the old BBS systems mostly operated in \"threaded\" format. Many posters prefer that format, for various reasons, over the 'flat' style of this board, AuctionWatch, OTWA, etc., and prefer to post on threaded format boards because of their preference

That's completely false. I've NEVER known anybody in the online auction arena that prefers threaded discussion over flat threads.

I can't wait until TR screws up a couple of styles. That will be a treat in itself.

And from what I saw, MySQL is already installed on their server, so Don won't wet his pants over that 3 month task

G'day Dave,
I must missunderstand this. I thought that threaded boards were like this one where the thread just continues as a thread.

I had thought that flat was what you get when you go into Ross's board when you are not logged into EZ Board (assuming that it still does this) and when you go into a thread it is in collapsed form and you need to click on each post individually to read it.

I am happy to admit that I am technically ignorant, and curious as to whether I am just in reverse to what the terms really mean.

Thanks,  Kevin (about to be away for 3 or 4 days)

UBB was one of the first (maybe THE first) to use a "flat" model, which has a disadvantage of not knowing who is replying to whom, unless the poster references the subject, which is common etiquette.

Threaded boards like the original wwwthreads, and like ezboard when you don't log in, usually have a little better performace because they'll usually only show one post at a time, with all the replies to the post underneath it as subject line links. It takes more time for the user to read the posts though, if there are many replies.
