Troy MacDonald’s Gegy.com site has been down the last couple of days. Not only is the main site down, but the accompanying stores sites are all down also, for instance, http://store.gegy.com/sa/greenbeamon12.
Has Troy forgotten to renew a billing agreement to keep the site going? Has his “world’s largest dot com startup, ever” failed to even make the radar of grade C ecommerce sites? Has he harvested so many emails that his spamhause broke down?
Calls to Gegy.com went unanswered.

Gegy, single handedly molested and mismanaged by Troy MacDonald, hasn’t posted anything in its news section in 7 months. The “monthly” newsletter hasn’t been published since July 17th.

Will Troy let this site site for a year as he did in the past, and then magically adjust the dates to make the page look fresh? We’ll see.
As Troy has told people in the past, he’s no longer the CEO, just the founder.

Gegy’s toll free number is still active (1-866-429-0707), although I’ve only heard recordings when I’ve called.
It also decides to increase the shipping rate charges that sellers have no control over.
“The first product line, home entertainment products, has been popular but has also proven to be a very competitive market with thin margins. We have had to make several price adjustments, in an attempt to achieve a stable balance between competitive prices and a fair return for our Sellers and our Supplier. These changes included a recent 4% price reduction that resulted in very competitive retail prices within a catalog that sets the industry standard for depth and breadth of titles. This was accomplished without reductions in seller commissions but, unfortunately, has resulted in an unprofitable situation for Gegy.”
…
“The key change is a 1lowering of commissions from 10% to 7.5% in our Retail Storefronts effective August 1, 2004. This is being done to ensure that the revenue split and pricing model achieves a minimum return to Gegy sufficient to support our operations and growth.
The costs of providing the Retail Storefront service, including comprehensive customer service and returns management, was an important consideration in making the commission rate change.”

They even include a graph for those math challenged comparing how badly Gegy is doing compared between a 10% comission rate and the new (Gegy Profit) 7.5% comission rate.
Don’t try to browse through any Gegy Branded Store. The following server error has been popping up consistently. Maybe a misbehaving secure port or instance? Who knows with Troy MacDonald’s “world’s largest dot-com startup, ever”.

Scott Samuel originally of honesty.com tries to revive the good ol’ days (without Carl) of auction management. Gets the word out about AuctionEthics with a CHARITY auction hocking his new site.
His vaporware, and secret members beta testers wears on users nerve, and they go so far as to compare him to Troy MacDonald of Gegy.com! The worst insult in the world!
Don’t believe the hype. Scott’s been talking about his tools (actually Carl’s), “merging” with Andale (a cash handout to Scott), and “free forever” tools for a long time. Go to page three of this discussion for the quotes below:

Substance? Message? Details? Lyrics? I have this awful Gegy flashback going on, can somebody kill it for me? Again I had to click-click-click my way to this page, and again I learned nothing along the way. Come on, guys, cut to the chase.
Hiya Steve,
Aw c’mon! It ain’t Gegy.
You of all people should know that. I mean, you’ve been involved in this industry forever, as have most all of us.
I wish I could be totally up-front and just type out direct explanations. That’s my nature. And, anyone who has ever met me, well they know I never shut up.
However, I also wish gasoline was thirty-seven cents a gallon, and dogs lived forever.
Problem is, that’s not reality.
We’re in a hyper-competitive industry, and even though I’m in personal contact with virtually every company and CEO in the industry, there are folks out there who aren’t completely on the up-and-up.
Auction management companies come and go on a monthly basis, many of which couldn’t care less for the community or what people out here think.
Whereas we’re far from that specific spectrum, after much debate, we decided to err to the side of caution.
I can say this much…
There are 20+ people currently at Ethical working on various tools for our first release.
One tool should effectively enable folks to predict a NBP before an auction’s end. Another is designed to stimulate bidding activity. A third will enable buyers to get their merchandise faster.
As I initially said, and Mike mentions above, the reason for the tight-lip treatment is that Ethical’s first Toolset consists of technology that currently isn’t available elsewhere.
Trust me when I say that we’d love nothing more than to just be direct and spit it all out, but that wouldn’t be prudent.
In the meantime, if possible, sit back and enjoy the little shows, and if you’d like include yourself (we want user video to show to the mass of ‘Net traffic we have here now.)
Really, when you cut it to the bone, Ethical isn’t about us.
It’s about all of you.
Best Regards,
Scott
I don’t know Scott, Mike, or anyone else on this staff. I can’t tell you a thing about them. I never did use anything offered by Honesty, so I have nothing to work from in order to “trust” these 8 guys. My opinion of eBay probably doesn’t align with the majority here, either, but I can say as far as AE is concerned I don’t have an opinion on them at all. You don’t have to defend your friends against my questions because it’s not about them.
I drew the Gegy analogy for two reasons, and both because I was in the middle of that mess. One being the carrot and stick approach. All this tease, forcing visitors through promotional pages, the “Will you use Ethics?” poll, and otherwise attempting to engender opinions and enthusiasm from a position of us knowing nothing while they know everything about what is coming. It’s more than vaguely familiar, ok? Stirring the buzz while the man operates behind the curtain.
The other reason I brought up Gegy is that character now named AEsop. Is he holding his own hands? Is he hiding egg on his tie? Is he trying to make me glad I’m here? He’s cuter than the ugly green guy, I’ll grant you that, but he’s not very logical and he’s altogether too remeniscent of a bad story in OAI. I can’t think of a company who uses a mascot these days, so I wonder why this one even exists.
NO, I don’t suspect that this will be a repeat of Gegy. No. Get that out of your head. But why act so mysterious when everything described is still under development? Roll it out, get some beta testers, and bring a product to the table. It might be so great that it will become contageous. If it’s not ready, why work the crowd as if it were imminent?
Maybe I asked because nobody besides Ray had any questions. Myself, I prefer to know what it is I am supposed to be enthused about.
